Desire

Philosopher Thomas Hobbs said that human desire is the fundamental motivation of all human action. Are you in tune with your desires? What do you want out of life?

I’ve found so many of us live life by default. We go to college or not. We get a job and start a career. We may get married and have children. In the midst of all of the many things we do, we haven’t stopped to intentionally decide what we want out of life and how we intend to achieve it.

In fact, we take whatever happens to be right in front of us. Occasionally we may feel certain desires or an idea to do something different, but we’ve learned to dismiss what we don’t believe is possible.

I know because I am actually describing myself. It took some time for me to literally stop what I was doing and change course. I had to change my way of thinking in order to do what I wanted.

Know that your most intimate desires or dreams can be realized. I believe we’re all placed here for a reason and given special talents to help make our world better, to lift our consciousness.

How is it possible to even know what you want?

One best way is to spend quiet time with you. Turn off the TV and iPod. Find a quiet space. When you’re silent you begin to hear your own internal voice. You notice your thoughts.

Some of the easiest and best ways to do this is through, meditation, yoga and Tai chi in; in fact meditation can easily be done anywhere. Just sit with your eyes closed and focus on your breath. I suggest setting a goal of a minimum of fifteen minutes daily.

Take note of the thoughts that come up. Stay in tune with the ebb and flow. No attachment or judgment. Just awareness. You can even do this on a daily basis.

You’ll be amazed at the clarity that will begin to slowly take over. It will help you to become calmer and more aligned with your desires. Write down what comes up. Keep a journal. Pay attention to what resonates with you.

And trust your desires. They’re the key to your happiness.

This post is so insightful, Guy. I guess you’re deeper than you look– Psyche. But really, I enjoyed reading it. Keep striving and keep encouraging others to do the same.

You know, one of the hardest things to do is to sit with yourself in silence. This is because of exactly what you just said, you begin to realize what your desires actually are but then there is life. I have been fearful all of my life to do the things I actually desire because life gets in the way. Work, school, family, bills ect….. I would love to learn to face life head on and do the things I have always desired without inhibition. Love the motivation you have brother. It is truly inspirational.

Denise thank you for the insight. You’ve already done one key thing. Your awareness is what helps to negate the fear. As you become more aware just keep taking one step at a time. Don’t worry about the one after. You’ll be amazed at how far each step will take you.
